I keep seeing kids in the real world and on my friends’ social media wearing these brightly colored, oddly shaped plastic glasses
. I always assumed they served some kind of purpose but never wanted to ask about them for fear of saying the wrong thing and upsetting
the parents.
But, I noticed recently one of my best friends posting pics of their kids wearing these glasses, so I texted him asking very nicely if they serve a particular purpose, because I keep seeing them. He explained that they’re called !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and they’re made of nearly indestructible extra-bendy plastic that in addition to being hard to destroy also stay stuck to kids’ heads better.
But when I see these things, I can’t for the life of me stop thinking about the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! my mom made me wear to play basketball in middle school in the 90s . Sure, I told myself if they’re good enough for Horace Grant they’re good enough for me , but I only had to wear them for basketball.
I’d be a little afraid to put my kids in these Miraflex frames as their daily drivers, because they’re funny looking, and other kids can be cruel. Then again, glasses ain’t cheap, and kids break shit, so who knows?

As a full grown kid who used to break or lose my glasses all the time, I’d make my kids wear these. But I’d go with a more neutral color.

Yeah they look silly, but as a grown-ass adult whose glasses keep sliding down my nose, I might even consider them.

I feel like the concept is sound but the designs are just not good. There’s gotta be a way to create a better looking frame shape that preserves the benefits.

I’m a middle school math teacher. Multiple times I have seen this scenario:
Child cannot see the board. Child needs glasses. People round up resources, whether parents, community based, Lions club, whatever, and eyeglasses are procured for the student. Student manages to lose them in less than a week. Or even in less than 24 hours. Because they don’t want to wear them. And they get Fs in their classes.
There are other glasses that are more durable and kid-friendly and look more cooler.
But I feelz.

Have they really made any headway into how ruthless school is?

these are a good threat. my insurance covers a pair per person per year. so when my daughter started needing glasses I said this is it, one really nice pair. but if you lose/break em, you get the goofy highly durable kind.
~5 years in an nothing more than a broken screw and few scratches here or there.

My kid fed their glasses to our dog a few days after getting them. That was about a $250 dog treat. I usu ally only see these glasses on very young kids or kids that have sensory issues, as they seem to be more comfortable.

I’ve had my glasses knocked out of wack enough times to appreciate those. Always playing sports (fortunately never actually broke the glass). I also had some sports glasses for a while and they were a lifesaver. Wouldn’t have wanted to wear essentially sports glasses all the time though. Those are some thick rims.
Hehe, I looked just like that top shot at one point.

weird ...if my kid needed glasses and picked those, “sure kiddo, and why don’t you pick another pair to wear when you dress nice?”

And probably a cosmic frustration to your parents.

Well they won’t break when they get punched in the face in the locker room.

If the kid picked them out themselves then yeah sure. But if we were in the glasses store I wouldn’t be like “ok you can only choose from these ones.”

I’m disappointed to see that apparently Chris Sabo doesn’t wear glasses these days...
I don’t currently wear glasses, but I’m afraid it’s coming . I’m getting more and more farsighted, and I think I only have around 6" of arm before I can’t hold my phone far enough away from my face to read it. May soon be time for reading glasses if nothing else.

Weird, when I was growing up my parents made sure my glasses were Flexon frames — flexible titanium that you could bend and it would just return to the original shape. Cool technology for sure, but I still kept very good care of my glasses (carbon fiber these days!).

I see several kids with these. One of them has been known to lose his glasses on a regular basis. His new pair are bright green.

If I were a little older, Kareem or James Worthy may have been my Rec Specs icon(s). But my mom is from Chicago so of course our household had to root for MJ’s Bulls, and Horace Grant it was.

Given that places like Zenni and Warby Parker are doing decent looking, stylish frames for like $23 these days, I don’t see any reason to force those on a kid. I haven’t bought new glasses for myself in years, not sure what my vision plan would cover, but that’s certainly an HSA expense anyway. I just wear contacts and keep glasses around for if I need to quickly grab something in the middle of the ni ght, they're about 7-8 years and 3 prescriptions out of date, but good enough for that, the difference between them has been very subtle.
Now, IF my kid were to decide he/she really liked the way those looked and picked them out, sure, why not?
OR, if I had a kid who was really irresponsible with glasses and smashed like 3-4 frames in a row, then it would definately be either Miroflex or military issue BCGs.
